From the masthead

This issue is the map.

Everyone is still selling the wave. The models. The copilots. The “AI-powered” stamp on yesterday’s software. That was the first trade: sell the tool while the tool still felt scarce.

It isn’t scarce anymore. What is scarce is getting AI into a real business, making agents that actually do the work, and remaining visible when the next customer never opens Google.

AI isn’t the opportunity. The problems AI creates are.

The Current is for creators and operators who will act. Not for people collecting model recaps. One reader. One job: decide whether a change is worth doing something about.

This issue does not pick a company to start. The three signals below are the map, not three startups. The Opportunity Engine is the method later issues will use: name the change, name the problem, name one buyer and one offer, run a test that can fail in a week, then score it. A score that cannot say no is not a score.

Issue #002 is the first time we do that. We take AI visibility — the one a single person can test without a client — and try to kill the obvious business.

What's changing

3 Key SignalsDriving the Next Wave

01

AI Implementation

Businesses are moving from experimentation to real-world implementation.

02

AI Agents

AI agents are becoming employees of sorts, designed to perform actual work.

03

AI Visibility

Your next customer may ask AI about you before they ask Google.

The result

The Implementation Layer

A new set of business opportunities is emerging around AI adoption, integration, visibility and optimization.

Why it matters

Three problems. One new market.

Treat these as separate stories and you will build the wrong company. Together they describe the Implementation Layer: the work between the model labs and the operating business.

  1. 01

    From pilots to production

The pilot graveyard is full. Boards are done with demos. Operators now need systems that sit inside the actual workflow — CRM, inbox, inventory, support, finance — and stay there on Monday morning. The gap between “we tried ChatGPT” and “this runs the process” is where new firms get paid.

  2. 02

    Agents that do the job

Not chat. Work. Agents take a goal, use tools, follow a policy, and hand back an outcome. That shift creates an unglamorous stack: orchestration, evaluation, permissions, memory, human review, and the glue that keeps an agent from quietly destroying a customer list. The ones who productize that glue will look like staffing firms did in the last cycle — except the headcount is software.

  3. 03

    Discovery without Google

Search is moving from ten blue links to a single synthesized answer. If the model does not know you — or knows you wrong — you do not exist. A new discipline is forming around how brands, products, and people are represented inside AI systems. Visibility is no longer an SEO footnote. It is a go-to-market problem.

We are not going to write a company for each of these. Issue #002 takes signal 03 only. Visibility is the smallest test. Implementation and agents are larger markets, and worse first tests, because you need someone else’s business before you learn anything.

The Opportunity Engine

From Signalto Opportunity

This is the method. It is not a score until it can say no. This issue names the map. The first scored run is Issue #002.

  1. Signal

    What's changing?

We monitor trends across technology, business, markets, culture and more.

  2. Problem

    What does it create?

We identify the new pain, inefficiency or unmet need.

  3. Opportunity

    Where can you make money?

We find specific, actionable business opportunities.

  4. Experiment

    How can you test it?

Each applied issue ends in a test small enough to finish in a week.

  5. Validation

    Is it worth pursuing?

We score it. The score is allowed to say don't build.
